Gas releases and other atmospheric changes can be extremely dangerous in the workplace. They can cause serious injury and death by asphyxiation; and, with the potential for fire and explosion, severe damage to plant and the surrounding environment as well. They are particularly hazardous to people working in confined spaces and during hot work activities.

Job Description for Gas Test Technicians

Test or analyze geological samples, crude oil, or minerals to detect the presence of petroleum, gas, or mineral deposits indicating potential for exploration or production or to determine physical or chemical properties to ensure that products meet quality standards.

Responsibilities of an Authorized Gas Tester (AGT)


  • Update his knowledge on the hazards that may be faced during entry, including information on the mode, signs and symptoms, and consequences of the exposure.
  • Identify all chemical hazards and recommends control measures to ensure safe entry.
  • Be familiar with all confined space entry equipment used, for example emergency breathing apparatus, man riding winch, tripod, etc.
  • Test and interpret the reading level of gaseous in the confined space.
  • Able to use common confined space entry equipment, i.e.; Gas Detector, ELSA, Man Riding Winch, Tripod, etc.
  • Able to test and interpret the gas test result.
  • Able to demonstrate the gas testing operations and the procedure to be taken in the event of emergency.
