Institution of Occupational Safety and Health

iosh training in kerala

What is IOSH training? If you've ever asked yourself this, don't worry, you're far from alone. On average the question is searched over 90,000 times on Google each month, that's over a million people every year! Without further ado, this blog will answer that question before moving on to address some frequently asked questions about IOSH courses such as do you need the qualification, can you take it and what are the benefits.

IOSH stands for the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. Based in the UK, but with members around the globe, it's a not-for-profit organisation covering everything there is to know about health and safety. They aim to regulate the profession of health and safety providers and do this by setting standards and connecting members to resources. They also provide support, guidance and training.

IOSH accredited courses are all aimed at different levels of the profession in any industry and are recognised across the UK and overseas. IOSH courses are among the most respected of qualifications in health and safety, and some of the most popular too, with roughly 150,000 people each year undertaking an IOSH training course. By choosing a training course from the IOSH, delegates can guarantee that the information that they are being given is legally correct.

What is IOSH Training As mentioned previously, IOSH courses are aimed at different levels of the profession. The IOSH Working Safely course, for example, is aimed at any worker within any industry, providing a strong grounding in health and safety legislation. The IOSH Managing Safely course is aimed at managers and supervisors, again in any industry, and provides more detailed information than the first course.

So, do you need an IOSH qualification? During 2011 alone, there were 26,000 major workplace injuries reported in the UK with the frequent causes of injury being manual handling, trips and falling from heights. Many of these cases could have been prevented had the correct health and safety training been issued. Health and safety is an important aspect of everyday life and everyone deserves to go to work and be safe.

Career progression via IOSH courses is a linear path and it is easy for trainees to move from Working Safely to Managing Safely when they are ready to, as each course follows on from the other. What's more, IOSH training isn't prescriptive to one area of expertise; the certification is general and can cover any trade or responsibility, so does not limit graduates to working in a purely health and safety role. It can be part of a wider management training scheme in any industry.
